Theme: BASE ON BALLS. 4 theme answers are common terms whose first words are the directional reasons that a baseball pitch would be a ball and not a strike. There are four of them, nice and balanced (and resulting in a walk), and then the revealer.
- 17A — Grounds for impeachment : HIGH TREASON
- 24A — TV show anchored by Bill O’Reilly from 1989 to 1995 : INSIDE EDITION
- 39A — Underhanded attack : LOW BLOW
- 51A — Hundred-to-one odds, say : OUTSIDE CHANCE
- 63A — Batter’s reward after pitches like those described at the starts of 17-, 24-, 39- and 51-Across : BASE ON BALLS
Something Good: Lots to like here, but I’m going to point out the fill. Of the 78 words, I see just a small handful that I think are weird. Thinking beyond myself (of the poor, poor noobs), the crossing of LAHR/RAGA could cause a headache. Other than that, just a few hardly worth mentioning. Everything crossed fairly, which is what truly matters. And the long (5+) stuff all seems good-to-great. Few complaints = good!
Pressed for time again. My classes are in full swing and I also like to sleep sometimes.
Great stuff today from Gary Cee. Tight theme, professional fill, and right down the middle (pun intended) for a Tuesday. Perhaps even more down the middle than usual — I flew through this thing like a 1974 Nolan Ryan fastball.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Gary Cee resembles my high school principal. I can’t find a picture of Mr. Ceccarelli anywhere on the Internet, but when I do, you can be sure I’ll post a side-by-side comparison.
Nice, cared-for long downs (DOGGIE BAG and MARSEILLE). *No* scrabbliness, which means no *forced* scrabbliness, which means relative smoothness throughout. Just a lot of goodness, nothing much to complain about.
Non-sports people could feel differently today than I do. I always forget about those sad, boring souls.
Just kidding! Go Phils!
