Something Good: The Middle. Look at that big, beautiful meatball hanging there like a rogue planet in deep space. I wanna bite it. I wanna put it on bread, cover it with tomato sauce, and have it for lunch. That’s how much I like it. Two 8s, two 9s and four 7s crossing two 9s, two 10s and a 7. All of them good — many of them great(despite the many convenient plurals, which I didn’t even notice during my solve). It’s a satisfying little puzzlechunk.
I’m just now noticing upon studying the grid that this is a pangram. That’s great. Didn’t care about it when solving, don’t really care about it now, but this is the kind of pangram I like to see. That is, one that doesn’t feel pushy and forced. The subtle pangram is the superior pangram. It appeases the pro-pangram faction while still catering to the demands of vocal, obstinate supersolvers.
So yeah, this is how you do a pangram.
Love TOO TOO. Love seeing TED TALKS and KAFKAESQUE and VELVET ROPE. I even found POPE LEO X kinda fun (somehow it seems far superior to just LEOX or LEO-whatever, which I’ve seen before). Many, many others too numerous to mention. Lots of good long stuff here, which is as it should be, of course.
And the short stuff — the glue, if you will — is also nice. 26 4- and 3-letter words, all of them fine to good. Nothing the average Monday solver shouldn’t know, with the possible exception of NOHO. NOHO is basically fairly crossed, but I suspect some solvers will quit after messing around in that southwest corner for a while (the crossings include TOO TOO, which may be unseeable for some, and THE ASP, which is a know-it-or-you-don’t kind of answer — possibly inferable, maybe not).
Should I complain about something? I can try. NATE Ruess crossing KURTIS Blow is pretty crazow, but kind of inferable and basically fun if you can muscle through it. The duplicated I (I DECLARE, I REALIZE) is a little inelegant, I guess, but they’re both pretty great answers, so who cares?
Sorry, there’s really nothing to complain about. This is a great Friday puzzle. Good constructing and editing. Quite nice.
